"A journey of 1000 miles starts with a single step."
This year I plan on stepping outside of my comfort zone and step up to the challenge of running 1000 miles for the Michael J. Fox Foundation as part of Team Fox and going one step beyond and participating in my first full marathon in November in New York City. There are numerous races leading up to that event, a planned climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro, and goals to achieve some personal records along the way. But I sure could use not only your emotional support but the Foundation could use your financial support. So it's time to kick it up a notch. I figure I have enough friends who can skip one speciality coffee drink and make a donation while I pound the pavement. See I'll log the miles and ice my knees, while you get to sip an iced drink and ring a cowbell. I'll run for the cause, you applause. That's a pretty good deal if you ask me.
Here's the other thing. My step-father, Donald M. Ledden, lived with Parkinson's for a fair amouny of time before his diagnosis. While he wasn't an athlete, he certainly loved his Giants and played golf every other day-in fact I know that walking those eighteen holes kept his spirits up and that activity made a great deal of difference. He lost his battle in August, 2011, and it is to honor him and those who continue to strive to find a cure for whom I run.
Which is the point. I am fortunate to be in good enough health that I can run, skip, zumba, electric slide, walk, jump rope, electric boogaloo, and bike as many times in a day as I can. And if while I do all that I can help the five million people worldwide who are living with Parkinson's disease - a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder - I will.
In the United States, 60,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year alone. There is no known cure for Parkinson's disease.
So, step up and help me make my steps make a difference.
Thanks for your support,
